Janis’ insider tips: Kos beyond the tourist trails

One of my absolute favorites. From a parking area, it’s about a 20-minute uphill walk to the ruins of Paleo Pyli, an abandoned medieval village that once protected locals from pirate raids. At the top you’re rewarded with a stunning view over the north coast and the Alikes salt lake, especially magical in the evening when the sun bathes everything in warm orange. On the way up, just before the final ascent, lies Taverna Oria: simple but truly delicious cuisine, homemade lemonade, goat cheese from their own production, and the island’s best tzatziki. Plus a view you won’t forget. Giorgos and his daughter have run it with love for years. Insider tip: the taverna’s open-air toilet has become a little attraction in itself.

Limionas is a small natural harbor on Kos’s west coast, quiet, a bit tucked away, and that’s exactly why it’s special. The cove is framed by rocks, the water crystal-clear and a dreamy turquoise, and the little colorful fishing boats give it that classic Greek village vibe. Right by the water sits a taverna known for its fresh fish – perfect for grabbing a seat with boat views after a dip. Not the place for long lounger days, but spot-on for anyone seeking peace and authenticity.

If there’s no wind at all, take the ferry from Mastichari to Kalymnos and explore by scooter. Kalymnos is rougher and more mountainous than Kos, famed for its sponge-diving tradition and now a mecca for climbers worldwide. Small bays, tight switchback roads, and the thrill of discovering an island less developed than Kos – a day that’s always worth it, perfectly rounded off with dinner at a traditional harbor taverna.

For sunset, Aplo Beach Bar in Mastichari is unbeatable. Slightly elevated above the beach, it offers a fantastic view over the bay across to Kalymnos. Family-run by Giorgos and his father, relaxed vibes, great drinks (the Cucumber Ginlet alone is worth the trip) – and when the sun sinks behind the neighboring island, you’ll see why it becomes a true favorite. Also, I can’t live without the Fried Feta and the Shrimp Saganaki …

Zipari itself is not particularly touristy, which makes it perfect for an authentic stop off the beaten path. The reason to stop has a name: Special. This ice cream parlor and patisserie is almost legendary on the island – homemade cakes, delightful treats, and ice cream you’ll never forget. Even true Italian gelateria connoisseurs would feel at home here. A must when you crave something sweet.

If you’re into the island’s history, the Asklepion is a must. The most important archaeological site on Kos sits on a cypress-covered hill above the capital and was once one of antiquity’s foremost healing centers – built in honor of Hippocrates, the "father of modern medicine," born on Kos. Spread across three terraces are remains of temples, colonnades, and treatment rooms, plus a fantastic view across to the Turkish coast. Perfect for anyone keen to dip into the era when Kos was the medical hub of the ancient world.
