The best kitespots for kitesurfing in May

In the joyous month of May, life is starting to get back outdoors! Weekends are planned on the coast, with barbecues in the evenings and cold beers to share the experiences of a successful day's kiteboarding. However, May is also a good month for a kite trip. The southern European destinations have come out of hibernation and offer plenty of wind and pleasant temperatures. For those who like it warmer and more adventurous, it's worth taking a look at Sri Lanka or Morocco. Both countries offer ideal conditions for an exotic kitesurfing adventure in May.

Greece: Rhodes

Kitesurfing in May

There are places that stick with you instantly. Theologos on Rhodes is one of them.

The Meltemi blows here reliably side-onshore from May to October – often starting light in the morning, then building to a steady 15 to 25 knots by midday. Beginners, intermediates and advanced riders all get their money's worth – and anyone looking to branch out can also try wingfoiling or windsurfing on site. Our partner school is the Surfing Bird Kite & Windsurf Center: IKO-certified, laid-back atmosphere, quality gear and a team that always keeps an eye on the water. The hotel is just a short walk from the spot, and the pool is perfect for unwinding after your kite session.

But Rhodes is so much more than a kite spot. The Valley of the Butterflies is just 20 minutes away, the medieval Old Town of Rhodes City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the west coast delivers sunsets that alone would be worth the trip.

  • Wind: Meltemi, 15–25 knots, side-onshore from the southwest
  • Short transfer: Rhodes Airport, only approx. 5 km away
  • Kite school: Surfing Bird Kite & Windsurf Center (IKO-certified)
  • Suitable for: beginners, intermediates, advanced riders – and non-kiters

Egypt: Seahorse Bay

Kitesurfing in May

Our long-time partners and friends at Ibi & Friends have discovered and opened up Seahorse Bay between Hurghada and El Gouna for kiters. There are three things about this great spot with a shallow water lagoon that we haven't found in Egypt before:
1. accommodation on the spot! No more TukTuk rides, fixed transfer times and missed winds.
2. Limited places for more space on the water! The number of kitesurfing students and kite storage spots are limited to ensure all guests have plenty of space on the water. If you want to prepare in advance, check out our Learn Kitesurfing video tutorials.
And 3. Kiting at low tide! There is a "pool" in the sea that stays in at low tide, where a handful of kiters can kite at any tide. We love it! Do you too?

  • Family atmosphere at Ibi & Friends Kiteclub Seahorse Bay
  • From bed to board: 20 metres from the accommodation to the spot
  • Large flat water lagoon for all levels!
  • Limited spots for more space on the water
  • Exclusive to KiteWorldWide
  • Destination for solo travelers, couples and families
