Travelogue: Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka
Summary
Arrival in Sri Lanka
We, Laura and Jelsa, hopped on a plane in mid-May to explore Sri Lanka for you—there’s so much to discover!
We happily made our way to Colombo. On arrival, Lakshman was already waiting with the wonderfully air-conditioned kite shuttle.
We reached the lodge just in time for breakfast and were warmly welcomed by the on-site team, the KiteWorldWide guides and instructors! After a quick freshen-up, we sat down: tropical fruit, fresh omelette, bread, and lots of things we’d never seen before—wonderful!
For a quick cool-down after breakfast, we took a short dip in the pool right in the middle of the KiteWorldWide Lagoon Lodge.
Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka
After breakfast we took the boat shuttle to the kite spot for a little scouting tour!
What an epic spot. Shallow water as far as you can see, a huge standing area, and of course deeper water for all the freestylers! Warm, bath-like water and endless sun. This kite expedition is bound to be a hit!
Over the next few days, the wind stats delivered for the season with a perfect 18 to 23 knots. So let’s go! Into the boat, into the harness, onto the pump, and get those kites up!
Laura and some advanced riders went with Sachin to Vella Island for a full-day downwinder—long beaches, strong wind, and tons of space. After two to three hours of kiting and a longer winter break, everyone felt those muscles later.
Simone stayed with me and the other beginners at the lagoon spot for a few lessons. Lunch was delivered to the spot, so we spent the whole day between the lagoon and the beach hut.
Excursions in Sri Lanka
The next day we chose the KiteWorldWide trip to Sigiriya and Minneriya National Park. In Sigiriya we climbed 1,860 steps—like a sauna hike—time travel at its best. Some stair sections are not for the faint-hearted... but the view is so worth it!
After Sigiriya came the safari part we were most excited about: seeing elephants in the wild!
After about two hours of jeep safari with a warm, funny driver over an off-road bumpy track—with squeals, mud splashes, wildlife, and tons of fun—they suddenly stood before us... these beautiful animals!
Baby elephants… just the thing for a jeep full of kite girls!
Even if the wind isn’t super strong—very rare and mostly early season—our guides always had something up their sleeves. We filled the time with kite films, great food, naps, books from the shelf, lots of games, and plenty of laughs.
Conclusion: our kite trip to Sri Lanka
The next day we finally got back on the water to kite! So, load up the boat and head across the lagoon.
After really learning to kite in Dakhla last year, I had my breakthrough! I kited both directions across the entire lagoon. I couldn’t hide my beaming grin all day—this kite expedition was so worth it!
Windy, sunny, and successful days in Sri Lanka—what an epic kite getaway! Our verdict: MEGA!
It’s simply wonderful! We’d loooove to jet off again and get on the water with our kites!
