Trip report: Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka

We, Laura and Jelsa, hopped on a plane in mid-May to explore Sri Lanka for you — there’s so much to discover!

Off we went to Colombo, all smiles. On arrival, Lakshman was already waiting with the wonderfully air-conditioned kite shuttle.

Right on time for breakfast we reached the lodge and were warmly welcomed by the on-site team, the KiteWorldWide guides and kite instructors! After a quick freshen-up, we hit the breakfast table: tropical fruit, fresh omelette, bread, and lots of things we’d never seen before — wonderful!

For a quick cool-down after breakfast, we took a short dip in the pool, located right in the middle of the KiteWorldWide Lagoon Lodge.

After breakfast we took the boat shuttle to the kite spot for a little exploration tour!

What an epic kite spot. Flat water as far as the eye can see, a huge shallow area and of course deeper water for all the freestylers! Bathtub-warm water and endless sun. This kite expedition is guaranteed to be a success!

Over the next few days, the wind stats delivered exactly what this season promises, blessing us with a dreamy 18 to 23 knots. Let’s go! Into the boat, harness on, pump up and launch those kites!

Laura and a few other advanced riders went with Sachin to Vella Island for a full-day downwinder. A trip to long beaches, strong wind and tons of space on the water. After two to three hours of kiting and a longer winter break, everyone had a decent bout of sore muscles.

Simone stayed with me and the other kite beginners at the lagoon spot for a few lessons. Lunch was delivered to the spot, so we spent the whole day in the lagoon and the beach hut.

The next day we chose the KiteWorldWide trip to Sigiriya and Minneriya National Park. In Sigiriya, after what felt like a sauna hike, we climbed the 1,860 steps. A journey back in time. Some of those stairs are not for the faint-hearted... but the view is so worth it!

After Sigiriya came the safari part of the expedition we were all most excited about: seeing elephants in the wild!!

After about two hours of jeep safari with a warm, funny driver over a bumpy off-road track, with squeals, mud splashes, wild animals and tons of fun, there they were right in front of us... these beautiful creatures!

Baby elephants... just the thing for a jeep full of kite girls!

Even if the wind isn’t super strong — which is rare and only sometimes at the start of the season — you’ll be well looked after, as our guides always had something up their sleeve. We passed the time with kite films, good food, naps, books from the shelf, plenty of board games and loads of laughs.

The next day we finally hit the water to kite again!!! So we loaded up the boat and crossed the lagoon.

After really learning to kite in Dakhla last year, I had my absolute breakthrough!! I kited the entire lagoon in both directions. I can’t hide the overjoyed look I wore all day! This kite expedition was so worth it for me!

This beautiful expedition with windy, sunny, and successful days in Sri Lanka was a brilliant kite trip! Our verdict: MEGA!

It’s simply wonderful! We’d loooove to fly back right away and get on the water with our kites!
